ARTS & CULTURE |
The Christina Living Arts Centre
Located in the heart of Christina Lake in the community park, the Christina Living Arts Centre celebrates its official Grand Opening on August 6, 2010. The focus of ten years work to create a Welcome centre for
the region, it will serve as an interpretive centre and as a
tourist attraction that will showcase the region’s vibrant arts and
cultural life, as well as its commitment to environmental sustainability. A gallery will display arts and crafts created by artists and
artisans from throughout the entire Boundary region. The Centre
will also offer a “Taste of the Kettle Valley” section for local food producers to display and serve their products. A retail shop, including
on-line sales capability, will offer locally produced items, as well as
a variety of other tourist-related products for sale to visitors.
The facility will also serve as a learning centre offering a variety of
evening, weekend, and summer courses in art, craft and ecological
design that will be open to the community. In addition to its arts
and crafts component, the Christina Living Arts Centre will focus on
the promotion of environmentally and socially responsible practices through a variety of demonstration projects, programs that
raise awareness and educate, as well as provide direct services to
the public. An interpretive centre will demonstrate the work of the
Christina Lake Stewardship Society in protecting our fragile ecosystems.
An Eco Machine will be treating all of the wastewater from the
Centre, R.V.’s and the proposed Seniors Housing Project. The Eco
Machine will be an incredible teaching tool about our ecosystems,
showing how nature works to break down waste through
microbes, fish, snails and aquatic plants, and produces clean water
without the use of chemicals or other compounds harmful to our
environment. It will be housed in a greenhouse, where visitors and
classes can come and see the process at work. There are no objectionable odours, only the fragrance of growing plants and flowers in
the greenhouse.
The next phase of this project will include a Studio Centre for artisans
and an outside amphitheatre for summer music and performances.
